Who We Are
Alice de Wolff - Board Treasurer
Alice has been involved in adult education, diversity and equity, and community-based research for over 40 years. She has a Masters Degree in Adult Education from the University of Toronto, and has managed projects across the prairies, in Ontario and in Africa. Her experience includes being the national coordinator for the National Action Committee on the Status of Women and a board member of the Council of Canadians. She was the community lead for two Community University Research Alliance (CURA) projects on the health and safety impacts of precarious employment, and a third CURA on the community impact of supportive housing. She lives in the Comox Valley, Vancouver Island.
Alice Grange - Board Chair
Alice Grange has long been involved in environmental and social justice activities. Currently she chairs the board of the Watershed Sentinel Society that produces the Watershed Sentinel Magazine and, passionate about restorative justice, volunteers with the Comox Valley Community Justice Centre. She is familiar with women’s health and reproductive rights issues, and the concerns of folks with different abilities. Her interests are varied, as are the problems that we face. Trauma informed, Alice understands the connection between familial and collective trauma, and the way we treat the earth, ourselves, and each other. It is her hope and intention that her work professionally, (as an EFT Tapping Practitioner), and with the SEF both contribute towards individual, collective and planetary healing.
Arzeena Hair - Board Member
Arzeena and her husband own and operate Amara Farm, a 25-acre certified organic vegetable and fruit farm in the Comox Valley. Arzeena earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Crop Science from the University of Guelph and her Master’s Degree in Sustainable Agriculture from the University of London, England. She is passionate about food security, climate action, and supporting the next generation of activists. Arzeena was a Director on the Comox Valley Regional District and currently sits on the Boards of Young Agrarians, CV Seed Savers and the Mid Island Farmer’s Institute.
Andrea Palframan - Board Member
Andrea Palframan (she/her; settler of Scottish and Irish ancestry living on unceded Hul'quimin'um speaking-people's lands) is Director of Communication with RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs). She is dedicated to make media that brings the strength of data together with the power of storytelling.
She holds a Masters in Intercultural & International Communication. Her research focus— how Indigenous communities are responding to, resisting, and adapting to climate change—forms the underpinning of her understanding of environmental justice and human rights issues.
Andrea is also a filmmaker: her documentary "Raven People Rising" screened at VIFF and won People's Choice award at the Vox Popular Film Festival; she is producer of "The Story of a Girl" with the Visual Epidemiology Project, and author of "In Common, Nature: an ethnography of climate adaptation in the Lesotho Highlands".
Delores Broten - Advisor
Delores Broten edits the Watershed Sentinel, a bimonthly environmental news magazine in its 31st year of publication. She also founded Reach for Unbleached as a grassroots campaign on pulp mill pollution. She has worked with most of the environmental issues and organizations in BC and on national toxics campaigns, as well as participating in numerous policy consultations. She was on the government negotiating team for the UN treaty called the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).
When her partner Don developed dementia she eventually gave up most of her government consultations and began to immerse herself into caregiving. She remains engaged with the difficult questions of how LTC can be improved and humanised, as well as the myriad of other problems facing late industrial civilization.
